Clubbing together for an electric revolution!

The UK’s largest independent car club, City Car Club, is working with innovative start-up LipraLoof Technologies Ltd, to trial smart power technology, which could one day see cars powered by AA-style batteries. Who’d have thought it?

James Finlayson, Managing Director of the hourly rental car club said: “When LipraLoof approached us we instantly realised how exciting this technology was â€" it has the potential to revolutionise the way we drive. However, like with any new technology, rigorous real-world testing is a must and with a 700+ fleet of cars which are used mainly for short journeys, we are in the perfect position to help.”

LipraLoof’s batteries contain complex mix of four metal hydrates which creates a quad, or 4A battery, which produces far more power than a standard battery. When these batteries are combined with technology that harnesses, stores and reuses the energy usually wasted when driving, it creates a system capable of powering a car up to 88mph over a significant distances.

LipraLoof’s founder and managing director Dr Ed Heaverben, explains: “We’ve combined our quad batteries with virtually 100% regenerative breaking which harnesses the energy normally lost when we brake. Another significant area where we’ve conserved energy is with the tyres â€" we’ve developed a specially designed tread that ‘grabs’ energy which norma lly escapes onto the road as heat. This saved energy is then stored in a French-Luxemburg engineered Flux Capacitor, ready for use when needed.”

It’s expected the trial and development phase will last around two years, and hopefully the commercial version of the complex system will be ready for market in 2016-17, and we at Auto Lah can’t wait to test it!

Berkurangnya visibilitas, kondisi permukaan jalan yang licin, genangan air yang bisa menyebabkan hilangnya traksi ban dengan aspal atau aquaplaning, dan banyak faktor lainnya menuntut pengendara harus selalu tangkas saat menerjang banjir atau hujan.

Berikut tips berkendara seperti diambil dari Fans Page resmi TM C Polda Metro Jaya yang bisa membantu mengatasi acaknya jadwal hujan di Indonesia.

Pertama, periksa semua lampu kendaraan apakah semua dapat berfungsi dengan baik. Lampu itu berguna menolong pengendara lihat di jarak pandang yang terbatas lantaran hujan. Nyalakan lampu utama meskipun siang hari dan hujan rintik-rintik karena membantu pengendara lain melihat kendaraan.

Kedua, periksa kondisi tekanan udara dalam ban dan kedalaman alur ban secara rutin minimal seminggu sekali, kondisi tekanan ban yang cukup dan alur ban yang masih baik akan menghindari kendaraan melayang di atas air (aquaplaning) dan tergelincir ( slip) pada saat hujan. Jangan mengambil resiko dengan menggunakan ban yang sudah tipis.

Ketiga, periksa kondisi kontrol utama komponen kendaraan yaitu kemudi, pedal rem, gas maupun kopling apakah sudah dalam kondisi baik.

Keempat, pergunakan alas kaki yang tidak licin, tahan air dan aman untuk berkendaraan. Siapkan juga jas hujan yang berbentuk baju dan celana karena jas hujan seperti ini lebih aman dibandingkan yang berbentuk ponco.

Kelima, kurangi kecepatan, mengemudikan kendar aan dalam kodisi kecepatan rendah akan membuat alur ban kendaraan anda lebih banyak bersentuhan langsung dengan aspal dan membuat daya cengkaram ban lebih baik.

Keenam, jangan sembarang menerobos genangan air karena kita tidak tahu kedalamannya. Hal ini bisa mengakibatkan kendaraan mogok atau terperosok kedalam lubang yang mungkin ada didalam genangan air tersebut.

Ketujuh, jika terjebak banjir dan kendaraan mogok karena air masuk ke saluran pembuangan gas kendaraan, jangan menghidupkan mesin kembali. Lebih baik didorong ketempat yang aman, lantaran di kuatirkan system pengapian bakal alami konsleting serta bisa bikin kendaran terbakar.

Dates Announced for 2014 2015 American Raceways Series

Dates for the second American Raceways Slot Racing Series have been released for the 2014-15 season.

The mini-series for retro cars proved very popular last season, as the races were contested on original tracks constructed by American Raceways, the leading builder of slot car tracks during the boom years of the 1960s.

“The three tracks that the races are run on are approximately 46 years old,” said series organizer Ron Hershman. “It is our way of preserving history and saluting the era in which slot car racing was one of the most popular hobbies in the nation.”

The series will kick off at Fastraxxx Raceway in Fremont, Ohio on Nov. 15 with an event on its 95 foot American Black Royal. Fastraxxx is truly unique in the fact that the track has not been redecked, and the racing takes place on the original repainted particle board surface.

Route 93 Raceway in Akron, Ohio will be the second series stop on Feb. 7 when it hosts action on its 155 foot American Blue King track, which is considered by many experts to be the most popular track design offered by American Raceways.

The ser ies finale will be held at Thazer Raceway in South Bend, Indiana on April 25 on its demanding 135 foot American Hill Climb design, which features the original ‘cross over’ sections.

Racing will be held for the Formula One/Indy, Can-Am and Group 7-68 retro classes, using IRRA LLC rules, procedures, and bylaws.

Defending champions in the inaugural 2013-2014 American Raceways Slot Racing Series were: Willy Custer (Formula One/Indy) and Cap Henry (Can-Am).

Anchoring Trust in the Increasingly Software Based Car

Electronic Control Units (ECUs) started out in the 1970s as discrete modules with each one doing one particular thing, at that time mainly for emissions controls and mileage.  Then they became connected via in-car networks with the invention of the CAN bus in 1985.  In-car networking represented a big improvement in capability.  However, being networked means that ECUs became vulnerable to mischief and thus they, and what the connect to (such as domain and area controllers) need to be secured cryptographically to ensure that the signals being sent have not been tampered with or corrupted, and perhaps most importantly, that they are authentic.   There is also the emerging need for confidentiality (i.e. encryption/decryption).

The picture below shows the top attack points.  This range or targets indicates just how vulnerable cars have become: 

With a car having so many places to attack, how can trusted security be implemented and why is it so important?  Well, the main thing is that trust leads to safety, especially as cars become more connected and autonomous.  ; Hacked or corrupted signals can have dire consequences in a car, which is obvious.  In a car, safety is related to security and security comes to a  large extent from cryptography.  (Note that safety and security are not exactly the same thing, but there is tremendous overlap and interplay, and safety is becoming much more dependent on cryptographic security as cars become more connected and autonomous.  For more on functional safety look here.)

Trust
Trust is paramount in digital systems, and increasingly so in automotive. Trust comes from cryptographic solutions that:

• Securely store secret keys
• Securely issue, manage, renew and revoke security certificates
• Include a mix of software and security hardened hardware devices, and
• Are manufactured in highly secure facilities

What Creates Trust?
A major tenet of security is that each system and sub-system will have different types of threats and a range of options to provide countermeasures to those. This means that the automotive security equation has many variables and thus is difficult to solve.

However, two things are always common to trustable cryptographic security, and they form the basic foundation of modern security:

1. A proven algorithm (e.g. Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC)), and  
2. A secret cryptographic key  (to provide the required level of security for the selected algorithm). 

The challenge for the automaker is to choose the right algorithm and key length for the available processing resources and to securely issue, manage/store, renew, and revoke the security certificates. Cryptographic strength comes from the combination and application of t hese principles, processes, and techniques. 
 
Trust Anchor
On a CAN bus, which was designed without security in mind, ECUs are exposed.   So, connected cars should employ best practices for security, but cost, complexity (especially of the supply chain) and time get in the way. Having said that, best practices will eventually prevail and that will likely include a hardware trust anchor system to establish, maintain, and update cryptographic processes.

 
From the diagram you can see the four basic things that create a PKI-based hardware trust anchor:

1. A trusted hardware anchor that stores the key< /span>
2. That key, which becomes the root of trust
3. The certificate chain anchored by the root of trust, and
4. A signing mechanism that creates the anchored certificate chain

Multi-level Security

Because there are so many systems in the increasingly software-defined car, security has to be multi-layered and fit the specific application. In other words â€" it must be tailored. You have to figure out what you are securing, what threats that system will face, and what countermeasures should be employed. You have to pick what pillars of security to apply; namely, confidentiality, data integrity, authentication, and non-revocation.
